PARENTING AROUND WHAT OTHERS THINK

Conversations with God teaches, “There is no such thing as right and wrong,” no sin or soul’s punishment for anything we do, because we have perfect free will and are all indivisible, yet differentiated parts of the Divine. For many, being one with God means that they choose to personify love and light in the world. Even without fear of punishment, they have decided not to hurt others because “We are all one,” and in hurting another, they know they hurt themselves.

Choosing consciousness over convenience

For me, it's very important to remain conscious in all of my decisions, so I try not to make blanket statements such as the one in the school's posting (read one article explaining the rationale here) because it takes the consciousness out of the individual decision-making in a potential situation.

No attachment to results…what does that mean in conscious parenting?

I had the joyous occasion to attend Dr. Shefali’s first annual Evolve: Conscious Parenting Summit last week. It was a wonderful moment --- okay a 3-day long “moment” --- for me to reassess and re-immerse myself in self-awareness. I think we all need that every once in a while, right? Anyway, one of my favorite conscious states is letting go of attachments to results. It is a mantra I have going, constantly, in my head: No attachment to results. I’ve had abundant opportunities to practice this mantra in the past year. It’s presented itself in my health, my finances, my housekeeping, my crafts, my holiday preparations, my writing, and yes, in my parenting!

My Spirituality and Parenting are Inseparable

For me, spiritual parenting means raising aware children who view themselves as part of the whole of humanity, who recognize that we are all one, and that everything we do affects others. It means being conscious of how our actions as parents affect the inner landscapes of our children. It means helping children be humans who want to better the world, who care about others, have empathy and are kind, and understand that actions have natural consequences both positive and negative.

REDUCE-REUSE-RECYCLE: PUPPET SHOW

We have done a "great" job of teaching our daughter about the three R's of caring for the environment. She has become especially attached to the REUSE portion of the cycle. As a consequence, she won't throw anything away. Scraps of felt, paper towel rolls, construction paper, boxes from greetings cards, plastic packaging from toys…I guess I should be happy, but my house might be featured someday on an episode of Hoarders. Look for me; I'll be lost in the pile of felt clippings. Fortunately, we have begun putting these treasures to use.

"ME AND MY SHADOW" ACTIVITY

When I was young, my dad used to take me to the office with him on the weekend. It was my, special, alone time with him, where I only shared his attention with his job rather than my two sibs, my mom's honey-do list, and all of the activities of home. I clearly remember listening to him sing the song "Me and My Shadow" as I followed closely behind him through the office! For some reason it always made me feel special that he sang that song for me, even if it was because I wouldn't let him leave my side while I "shadowed" him at work.
